Program Overview

We have high expectations for our students
At Provo Canyon School we believe that children thrive on a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Our expectations are based upon the philosophy that youth must take responsibility for their actions or inactions. They must also show consideration and respect for others. This philosophy is evident in all areas of campus life; from the cleanliness and order of personal belongings to daily interactions with staff and peers. We also expect students to achieve their highest potential in academics while they work on the issues that resulted in placement at Provo Canyon School. At Provo Canyon School we are committed to providing an environment conducive to success.

Early Adolescent Program
Provo Canyon School offers a special program designed to meet the unique developmental needs of boys ages twelve to fourteen. A self-contained unit and program is provided for these early adolescents. Staffing ratios are higher, allowing these students to receive increased individual attention. Many of these boys are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. The program is designed to address accompanying emotional, behavioral and academic challenges these boys face.

Educational Emphasis
Our students are generally of average to well above average intelligence. Our fully accredited program and small class sizes at Provo Canyon School are designed to meet each child’s individual needs and to facilitate the ability to work with learning differences. Each student arrives at Provo Canyon School with a unique level of knowledge, skills and academic abilities. Once academic ability and needs are determined through testing, an educational plan is developed to help the student progress and experience success in the classroom setting.

Our faculty, most certified in Special Education, are hired for their outstanding teaching skills as well as their ability to deal effectively with students with special needs. Their priorities include helping students develop self-esteem, initiative and self-control, as well as building a solid academic foundation.
Many of our graduates continue their educations in colleges and universities. We believe that students should leave Provo Canyon School with the social and academic skills necessary for them to assume responsible roles in society.

Treatment & Care
Provo Canyon School has earned a reputation for succeeding with adolescents who have strong potential but have experienced limited success in their families, schools and communities. Many of our students have not done well in previous treatment settings. The continuum of care at Provo Canyon School includes individual, group, family and experiential therapy. A structured, therapeutic living environment and fully accredited academic program are provided. A drug and alcohol program serves the special needs of adolescents with substance abuse and addiction problems.

Each child in our program has a group of professionals looking after their care. We call this group a treatment team. The treatment team includes staff therapists, counselors, doctors, and teachers. Soon after admissions, the treatment team completes a series of assessments that may include psychiatric, psychological and/or academic assessments. Together, the treatment team carefully coordinates a Master Treatment Plan for the child. These plans are used to monitor the progress of each adolescent through the various levels of the program. Reality oriented therapy and techniques address the basic issues behind the adolescent's maladaptive beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes. Our therapy takes a comprehensive approach, utilizing both individual and specialized group therapy. Individual treatment plans are tailored to be flexible and responsive to meet the specific needs of each student and his or her circumstances. Treatment modalities may include a wide range of options such as anger management, sexual issues/trauma resolution, impulse control, stress reduction, assertiveness training, and substance abuse groups. Additionally, Provo Canyon School offers a wide variety of therapeutic recreational programs.
